Linie West verbindet fußläufig die vier gut nacheinander zu erreichenden Kunstinstitutionen. Die Initiative wird wieder im November und darüber hinaus mit gemeinsamen Ausstellungseröffnungen fortgesetzt.

Ludlow 38 präsentiert Früchte der Arbeit, eine Ausstellung der in Berlin lebenden Künstlerin Natascha Sadr Haghighian. Die Installation beschäftigt sich in mehrdeutiger Weise mit dem Finanzsystem und den Bezügen zwischen Geld, Wert sowie den subjektiv daran geknüpften Vorstellungen. Ursprünglich 2008 für den Frankfurter Kunstverein entstanden, unterstreicht die neue Präsentation bei Ludlow 38 die diagrammähnlichen Qualitäten der Arbeit.

Im vorderen Raum von Ludlow 38 steht ein Kohleofen neben einer Palette Briketts aus eingestampften Eurobanknoten mit einem Nennwert von ca. 90 Millionen Euro. Die verschlungenen Ofenrohre führen durch eine Glaswand in den hinteren Ausstellungsraum. Durch das Fenster ist eine Wolke aus Plastikäpfeln zu sehen, die von buntem Discolicht angestrahlt werden und sich auf diese Weise vielfach als Schatten auf den leeren Wänden abzeichnen. Durch die Glasscheibe dringt gedämpfter Klang von Technomusik.

Im lokalen Kontext von Frankfurt/Main beschäftigte sich die Arbeit Sadr Haghighians vor allem mit der Einführung des Euro in der Europäischen Währungsunion 2002. Frankfurt/Main ist die Heimat der Europäischen Zentralbank und ein Zentrum des europäischen Finanzhandels. Das Rohr, welches wie eine Diagrammlinie durch die Installation führt, suggeriert eine Reihe von Beziehungen, die gleichzeitig eindeutig und rätselhaft sind. Während der Euro als stabilisierte Währung einerseits den europäischen Handel unterstützen sollte, fiel der Wert des Geld in den Händen der Bevölkerung andererseits nahezu über Nacht um 50 Prozent, da die Umtauschrate zur früheren Währung, der D-Mark, ungefähr 1:2 betrug. Wert wurde gleichzeitig geschaffen und ausgelöscht. Harte Währung und Marktexpansion gehen Hand in Hand mit dem Verlust von Arbeitsplätzen und dem Umzug von Produktionsstätten.

In New York, einem Weltfinanzzentrum, entfaltet die Arbeit weitere Bedeutungsebenen. In der Finanzkrise gerieten Währungen weltweit unter Druck und verloren an Wert. Mit den von verschiedenen Regierungen durchgeführten Rettungsaktionen, und trotz der wiederholten Forderung nach stärkerer Finanzmarktregulation, gingen damit Kürzungen von Sozialleistungen einher. Kurioserweise hat die Finanzmarktkrise populistische Stimmen gestärkt, die eine Wiedereinführung von Landeswährungen fordern.

Zudem stellt der “Eventcharakter”, der durch die Musik und das Licht im Raum erzeugt wird, eine Verbindung zu alternativen Ökonomien her, die im postfordistischen Wirtschaftssystem an Einfluss gewonnen haben. Wert ist also eine Frage der Interpretation, obgleich er auf gemeinsam geteilten Annahmen basiert und unser aller Leben beeinträchtigt.

This part of the evening will discuss the work of the New York-based collective Art Club 2000 and Berlin-based initiatives from the early 1990s that investigated the changing relationship between art and economy. The two cities Berlin and New York will be used to discuss cultural economies within the changing urban landscape and the post-fordist condition.

This accompanying event at the Museum of American Finance examines the culture and various symbolism’s of the financial system and gives participants the chance to discuss ideas of currency value, money circulation, share trading and the credit crisis within a former market place. Founded in 1988 and housed in the former Bank of New York headquarters, the museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

A tour of highlights in the permanent exhibition of the museum will be led by Leena Akhtar, the curator of the museum.

In “Welcome (TO THE TEKNIVAL)”, an ongoing work since 2008, the authority of historiography is addressed. At the center of the project is the Villa E.1027 in Southern France, designed by modernist architect and furniture designer Eileen Gray, which is currently undergoing restoration. Based on the history of the building, which among other things contains a series of wall paintings by the famous architect Le Corbusier created against the will of the building’s architect, the decisions about what is considered worth keeping or what is original are debated. Akhøj regularly documents the progress of the site in order to record the historical layers of the building, which are simultaneously reconstructed and destroyed. The title of the work refers to two pieces of graffitti in the house that stand beside each other, yet originate from different time periods, one of them half erased by a layer of black paint. 

The second work, “Abstracta”, ongoing since 2007, focuses on a display system that the Danish architect Poul Cadovius originally developed in 1960 for a World’s Fair. In 2006, Kasper Akhøj participated in a research project in former Yugoslavia when he noticed a modernist display system used in a variety of contexts, from shoe stores and market stands to museum exhibitions. Consequently, the artist embarked on a journey to trace the migratory movement of the modular display system from the West Balkan states back to its earlier incarnations in China, eventually leading to its origins in Denmark. Alongside photographic documentation of the system in application, Kasper Akhøj uses the various elements he has collected over the years as material for sculptural works. In its spatial presentation, the installation recalls the utopian architecture of Late Modernism, like modular megastructures, in a model perspective, and thus recollects a context out of which the display system originated. 

Kasper Akhøj (*1976) lives in Copenhagen and New York. He is currently Artist in Residence at the 29th São Paulo Biennial and will have a solo exhibition at Wiels – Center for Contemporary Art, Brussels later this year.

In der fortlaufenden Arbeit “Welcome (TO THE TEKNIVAL)” (seit 2008) geht es um die Wirkmacht der Geschichtsschreibung. Im Zentrum des Projektes steht das von der modernistischen Architektin und Möbeldesignerin Eileen Gray entworfene Haus E. 1027 in Südfrankreich, das derzeit restauriert wird. Aufgrund der Geschichte des Gebäudes, das unter anderem ein vom berühmten Architekten Le Corbusier gegen den Willen der Architektin angebrachtes Wandbild enthält, sind die Entscheidungen, was als erhaltenswert oder ursprünglich angesehen wird, höchst umstritten. Akhøj dokumentiert den Baufortschritt regelmäßig, um die verschiedenen historischen Ebenen des Gebäudes zu erfassen, die zugleich wiederhergestellt und zerstört werden. Der Titel der Arbeit bezieht sich auf zwei nebeneinander stehende, aber aus unterschiedlichen Zeiten stammende Wandschriften im Gebäude. 

Die zweite Arbeit “Abstracta” (seit 2007) arbeitet mit einem Displaysystem, das der dänsiche Architekt Poul Cadovius ursprünglich 1960 für eine Weltausstellung entworfen hatte. 2006 nahm Kasper Akhøj an einem Forschungsprojekt im ehemaligen Jugoslawien teil und entdeckte dabei das modernistische Display in großer Anzahl und unterschiedlichsten Formen und Nutzungszusammenhängen. In der Folge versuchte der Künstler die Geschichte des modularen und flexiblen Systems Abstracta nachzuvollziehen, das vor allem in China und in Mittelosteuropa reproduziert wurde und dort in Schuhgeschäften, Marktständen und Museen gleichermaßen zum Einsatz kommt. Neben einer fotografischen Dokumentation des Systems im Einsatz verfolgt Kasper Akhøj in diesem Projekt vor allem eine skulpturale Umarbeitung der über die Jahre angekauften Elemente, die ihm als Arbeitsmaterial dienen. In ihrer Präsentation im Raum erinnert die Installation an die utopische Architektur der Spätmoderne, an modulare Megastrukturen in einer Modellansicht, und ruft auf diese Weise den Kontext des Entwurfs in den 1960er Jahren in Erinnerung. 

Die Ausstellung entstand in Kooperation mit Overgaden, Kopenhagen.

The event “Cultural Identities” will deal with the relationship of visual identity and design in the field of culture, or more specifically, art institutions. In a workshop and a public conference, two aspects will be discussed. For one, the event will focus on function of design to represent or mediate art institutions. How do visual identities relate to programmatic concepts of an institution – its ideals, but also an affiliation with certain discourses? How does experimental branding work within this field? On another level, the conference will discuss design as a subject of institutional practice. What are the potentials of design exhibitions – and how might design be understood in this context?
 
“Cultural Identities” is a cooperation between the Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, the Institute for Book Design and Media Development, and Künstlerhaus Stuttgart.

If a tree falls in a forest and nobody is there to witness it, would a poster about it make it more real? A collaborative workshop between Åbäke and Axel Wieder, starting from the archive of the Stuttgart Künstlerhaus and the gaps in the memory it accumulated. How fiction and fakes are sometimes more real than the facts.

Please come with the remembrance of a significant event for which you have no photographic documentation. Please bring a physical object which is apparently trivial but triggers an unexpected story.

Ausgehend von kürzlich gesehenen Ausstellungen untersucht der Workshop wie mit typographischen Mitteln Erinnerungen an Ausstellungen kommuniziert werden können. Die Teilnehmenden produzieren jeweils drei Poster. Drei Erinnerungen, eine Sequenz: Wie die Erinnerungen miteinander verbunden sind kann frei gestaltet werden, aber sie bilden ein Sequenz , nur mit typographischen Mitteln, ohne Bilder. Es geht also auch um das Schreiben, um das Transkribieren von dem, was wir sehen. Es geht um das, was wir von visuellen Erfahrungen im Gedächtnis behalten.

Today, with his schnapps distillery Stählemühle, Keller is listed amongst the top 50 distilleries in Europe by Destillata and Gault Millau, is a two-time winner of the Goldenes Stamperl, and has been honored with more than 110 awards for his spirits in the past 3 years. As latecomer to the profession, Keller processes rare sorts of wild fruits in small connoisseur batches into distillation rarities, though he also distills classics like “Zibärtle”, “Ribisl” or “Türkenkirsch”. A choice palette of liquors, herbal and fruit spirits – all of the highest quality – round out the Stählemühle assortment.

In the framework of a 3-hour tasting, with slide presentation, sensory class, and tasting of 15 selected distillates, Christoph Keller will initiate participants into the world of fine spirits, the regional variety of table fruits and wild fruits, the history of distillation and its technical subtlety, and thereby show how the alchemical art of distillation is counted as one of the “Seven Arts ” – and thus not so distant from the practice of visual art.

Christoph Keller (*1969) has been publishing with JRP/Ringier in Zurich a series of artist books called “Christoph Keller Editions ” since 2007. His widely-traveled archive “Kiosk – Modes of Multiplication ” is housed at the Kunstbibliothek (Library of Art) in Berlin. Keller teaches at various art schools and is currently developing the “Schwarzwald Dry Gin” Monkey 47.

This is the closing event to the conference “Cultural Identities”, taking place at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, June 25 – 26, 2010.
