Hier und jetzt: Köken Ergun
Presentation

May 26, 2010

Köken Ergun (*1976 in Istanbul) is a visual artist currently presenting his work in the exhibition “Another Country/Eine andere Welt” curated by Övül Durmuşoğlu at IFA Gallery Stuttgart. For Hier und Jetzt, he will present a selection of video footage from the archives of B’Tselem – The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories. Since 2007 as part of “The Camera Distribution Project” B’Tselem has distributed over 150 cameras to Palestinian families living in high-conflict areas. The artist has selected footage from the archives that reveal personal and unexpected moments.

Köken Ergun studied acting and visual communication design in Istanbul and London. He was working with theatre director Robert Wilson and has exhibited and shown his films internationally. Along with Clemens von Wedemeyer, Hito Steyerl, Yael Bartana and Guy Ben Ner he is the founding member of AFAVA, Artists’ Film and Video Association. He is currently completing his PhD at Istanbul University and the Freie Universität, Berlin. Ergun teaches at the International Art Academy Palestine in Ramallah.

“Hier und jetzt” presents a weekly series of artists talks with artists who live and work – sometimes temporarily – in Stuttgart. Working in different media and disciplines, and using different presentation formats, from talks, discussions to performances, the series implies a panorama of contemporary practices from the region.

Parts of the series are co-produced with the Akademie Schloss Solitude. Curators: Michael Birchall, Axel J. Wieder.
